Research Areas

Geoscience Education Research (GER) involves how people think and learn about Earth at many different scales and in many different environments.

In the Lab

In the Classroom

In the Community

Our work takes place in the laboratory setting where research participants come to engage in research studies we have designed.  Laboratory studies allow for more controlled studies before implementing a full scale classroom study and/or in-depth understanding of a specific phenomenon. Example of such studies may include: eye-tracking, curriculum deployment tests, interview based studies, etc.

Our work also takes place in the classroom (7-20) where we are often interested in how curricula or pedagogical techniques may influence students' understanding, engagement or affect towards a specific discipline or topic.  Examples include: testing of technology in the classroom, examining active learning based classroom strategies, or understanding field based learning settings.

Our work also occurs outside of formal learning spaces where we may be interested in applying results of the research to a broader audience or use informal science communication efforts.  Examples may include research in museums, stakeholder workshops, conferences, surveys with the public, etc.
